So what should we do with our articles for TC3 now that TC4 is coming out?

We can do what we did with TC2 back in the day and do like what we did with Boots_of_the_Traveler and move the contents to Boots_of_the_Traveler/old... or maybe we could be more specific this time and do Boots_of_the_Traveler/TC3?

I would treat both TC4 and BC4 as separate mods. Maybe have them share pages if they're the same.

Judging by the videos for TC4, there are similarly named items which would cause conflicts in article naming...

Well, it's not like we haven't had similar conflicts before?

Interesting... why did all Azanor's new videos - other than the latest (which says TC4) - say TC3.1? Are both coming out?

Azanor was initially going to name the newest version of Thaumcraft as 3.1, but he's now decided to name it as Thaumcraft 4 due to the fact that it's such a dramatic shift from Thaumcraft 3 and there are so many radical changes that it can't really be called 3.1 at this point.

Oh, I assumed that the TC 3.1 stuff would have been for the MC 1.6 update and the TC 4 stuff would have been for the MC 1.7 update lol

I don't think we've ever dealt with a major Thaumcraft update before; last one was Thaumcraft 2 --> 3, and that was back in 1.2.5, a Minecraft version that only ever hosted the Retro SSP pack. Thaumcraft 2 wasn't even in this pack, so we've always had Thaumcraft 3 in FTB.

I see no reason to deviate from the structures that are currently in place; where there's conflicts, such as with Boots of the Traveller (not sure if this is an actual conflict, just an example) and the mechanics have changed, the old is renamed to Boots of the Traveller (Thaumcraft 3) and the new is created at Boots of the Traveller (Thaumcraft 4). If there are no changes in mechanics from one version to the next and/or no conflicts, then there's no reason for this and the same page can be kept or a new page created if it doesn't already exist.

These are my thoughts; anyone else?

I think that a separate version page should only be created when there are major changes to an item/concept.

For small changes of an item between the versions, a note on the page explaining the difference should be enough.

Personally, I think I'd prefer using spoilers to reveal the appropriate version content on a page, rather than having two separate pages.

I think that a separate version page should only be created when there are major changes to an item/concept.

This is why I proposed moving those articles to articles of the same name but ending with /TC3

I think we should copy all of the Thaumcraft articles to articles of the same name but ending with /TC3 and then update the navbox for that and then be done with the TC3 articles, leaving them in existence for those who still need it and update the articles for TC4 from there.

Just copy it all and leave it alone for users of TC3.

EDIT:
We really should decide something, if nothing is decided soon I will do the above.

Maybe also have a different navbox for TC3 and TC4?

Yes, what I will do if no one else suggests something soon will be copying everything to a side location (the /TC3 thing) and that includes the navbox, and yes I will be updating the navbox's links.

EDIT:
Though I will probably be leaving the Thaumcraft 3 page easily accessible and with the altered navbox to go to only TC3 articles.

I've not actually tried TC4 yet.

How different is it? I know research is done differently, golems are controlled differently and there is some form of physical taint back, but otherwise? Have most of the items etc changed?

If its just the above I'd almost suggest just leaving it as is and listing the versions on an items page.

If there are more changes than that, separate version pages would certainly be sensible.

Someone did something similar on the buildcraft wiki, except they left the old version as the main page and the new version pages had /BC3. This was a bad idea as there weren't actually many changes, and the old versions continued to get edited more than the "new" ones.

Well, I'm no expert on TC, but I know that research and the way aspects are gained are the biggest changes. Wands also work differently - you only have one type of wand, which can be upgraded with caps and can emulate the other wands with foci. And yes, there is now a dedicated tainted biome, AFAIK.

I'd say that if the changes to an item are not too big, a separate section or just poining out the differences would be sufficient. However, things like Research should be split up into "Research (ThaumCraft 3)" and "Research (ThaumCraft 4)", with the main Research page being a disambig.

It is basically a different mod with similarly named items.

Using the /TC3 suffix for the existing pages does sound like the best idea then.

It is the best idea given in just about a month. I am forced to implement it.

All I am technically doing is archiving the TC3 articles so that users of TC3 can still access that information so that the new information for the new mod can be added.
