Alternate items in crafting grid?

Is it possible to add alternate crafting items to a recipe? E.g. Thermal Dynamics Resonant Servos can be crafted using either Basic or Hardened Servos as ingredients, which imho would be good to show on the wiki. Is this possible without creating different recipe images for each possible combination?

I hope I didn't miss anything while searching, but I couldn't find any mention of this on the forums or in the Grid/Crafting Table template doc.

If you mean have the ingredients alternate within the same grid, then no, our templates currently do not support that.

That's exactly what I meant. I'll stick to text explanations then...

You could use gifs, though I don't know if that's standard practice.

It is not.

As of yet.

I've done that once or twice before.

I've noticed, but it is not standard practice as of yet.

Maybe instead of using gifs we could... have a special template to use that will change the listed images for the one image shown? So... it is like a manually made animated image?

This way we limit the number of random images uploaded to the site AND any random combination of images can be produced with relative ease.

I noticed this is done already with the InfoBox images:

|gridimg = Grid <Name1>.png;Grid <Name2>.png;...
|img = Item <Name1>.png;Item <Name2>.png;...

How hard would it be to implement this in a grid template? Just an idea

- My level of Lua coding isn't advanced enough, I think, to tackle something like this, but I could give it a go with some help

That's actually JavaScript. It's not that we can't do it (though it does come with some additional challenges because the images in grids have links and such), but we've not done this because of several reasons. I'm sure dgelessus listed them somewhere, but I don't remember where. In any case, we don't want to do it for reasons which include the fact that you don't get an immediate overview of all recipes, as you have to wait for it to loop through. Generally we prefer formats where you immediately see what works.

I was under the impression that we wanted to make it look more like NEI?

Sounds like something I would do, but I can't remember or find where I could have done that. As RZR0 said, it's not as clear as listing the recipes separately, and there aren't very many situations where this would be very useful. To be honest the way NEI does it can be very annoying in large modpacks - there are *so* many ore dictionary alternatives, many of which you don't care about or look like they were just added for fun (hey look, you can use oreberries as nuggets!). The cycling animation also makes it hard to see what the "real" item is, when e. g. you can use normal or sticky pistons in a recipe. (I'm looking at you, GregTech and OpenComputers.)

This is what I've been using for note worthy alternate items:

== Note ==
*{{Substitute|Certus Quartz Crystal|Nether Quartz|Pure Quartz Crystal}}

The template sets sub objects for the SMW and keeps the recipe section uncluttered.

I agree with dgelessus it certainly can get annoying to bits when NEI shows all sorts of coloured Stained Glass when all I needed was to know I can use plain old Glass... it's even more annoying when I want to use the Shift+? feature of the ME Pattern Terminal!
