This has already been discussed before, but since we haven't really made a decision on the topic I'll bring it up again.
As you are probably aware we currently have a LOT of subforums for individual modpacks, usually one for each, which currently adds up to 32 separate subforums. With new packs constantly being released the Modpacks section is getting even fuller, so some kind of better categorization would be good, if not even soon necessary. So far there have been two ideas on how this could be done:
1. Separation of FTB/third-party or current/legacy packs. While the majority of the packs are compiled and maintained by the FTB team, there are a significant amount of packs by other authors or teams, which could be used as a sorting criteria. There has also been a post by Slowpoke a while back where he stated which packs were no longer being updated/maintained, we could thus also separate by "supported-ness".
2. Separating by Minecraft version. This one is pretty straightforward, one category per major Minecraft version. This would allow for reasonably-sized categories, but of course we'd also at some point have too many version categories (currently it would be 5, counting 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7, which is a manageable amount).
These approaches could also be combined, e. g. version categories for official packs and a separate one for third-party ones (because the latter tend to be updated across Minecraft versions).
So, what does everyone think? Of course feel free to post your own suggestions as well.
